U.S. Will Sell Ghost Fleet.
Solomons Island, Maryland. Four aging liners, seized from Germany when the U.S. declared war in 1917 and which took 200,000 “Doughboys” to France, will be sold at auction or broken up for scrap metal.
Submarine USS Squalus Heroes Are Decorated.
Washington DC. The Congressional Medal of Honor is bestowed upon four naval men for bravery during the rescue of the survivors of the ill-fated USS Squalus (SS-192) that sunk on May 23, 1939 off the coast of Portsmouth, N.H. Shows divers William Badders, Orson L. Crandall, James Harper McDonald and John Mihalowski receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor.
President Roosevelt looks on while former-Governor Murphy is sworn in at the White House as a Supreme Court Justice. Robert Jackson takes the oath as the new Attorney General.
Nation Mourns Senator Borah

Fox River Grove Illinois. Two ski jumpers, competing in the Norge Ski Club meet, are seriously hurt when they crash headlong down the slide. Torger Tokle, young Norwegian ski jumping ace sets a new record with a 195-foot leap.
