Operation Abolition-Story of Communism in Action

This film was produced by the Department of Justice to expose a plot by the Communist Party in America to “abolish” The House Committee on Un-American Activities. Scenes of a Communist inspired riot in San Francisco by Communist Party Leaders and student sympathizers from University of California (Berkley) in San Francisco in May 1960.

A pamphlet titled “The Un-American Activities Committee Should Be Abolished” is shown. This phase of the Communist War on America was called “Operation Abolition”. Congressman Francis E. Walter, Chairman of The House Committee On Un-American Activities (HUAC), explains the Communist was working to destroy the House Committee on Un-American Activities, weaken the FBI, discredit J. Edgar Hoover, and to render the security laws of our government ineffective.

Communism in action in America. Communist sympathizers in San Francisco, California carry signs in their protest march against the Un-American Activities Committee hearings. Congressman Willis explains the purpose of the hearings. Scene of Harry Bridges being escorted out of City Hall. Archie Brown, identified as the number two man in the California Communist Party, distributes propaganda material. Merrill Bronski another Communist Party Member is shown outside the hearing room.

Scene inside hearing room shows Douglas Wachter, University of California Sophomore and Communist Party Member. Douglas Wachter played an important role in the student riots.

Hearing room is filled to capacity. Communist agitators outside the hearing room began leading the crowd in chants and song while the Committee attempted to conduct its proceedings in the hearing room. In the morning session the student contingent along with subpoenaed Communist succeeded in disrupting the hearings. The Chairman Willas is forced to ask the police to eject Archie Brown , several students, and Merrill Bronski from the hearing room. Douglas Wachter, University of California Sophomore and Communist Party Member is called to testify. Douglas Wachter reads a prepared statement. He refused to answer the question “are you a Communism Party Member?”

At the noon recess of the Committee hearings a protect rally was held at Union Square. Two San Francisco City Assemblymen and a Clergyman bitterly denounce the House Committee On Un-American Activities hearings further inciting the students.

The hearings and other business activities at City Hall are disrupted by the Student Committee for Civil Liberties and Communist Party members. Police remove Archie Brown, Saul Wachner, Morris Graham, Merrill Bronski, Juanita Wheeler, and Sally Sweet.

On the second day of the hearings Friday, May 13, 1960 loud speakers are set up so spectators can hear the proceedings outside the city hall hearing room. The demonstration in the hallway outside the City Hall hearing room turns into a violent riot as police move in to restore order. Police use water hoses to force students demonstrators out of the building. Riot Police remove protestors one by one from City Hall and into waiting paddy wagons. Scenes of protestors being booked at police station.

Michigan Congressman Johansson speaks on how the Communist leaders used students to achieve the goals of the Communist Party.

Longshoreman and Communist party leader Archie Brown is a defiant witness and is removed from the hearing room. Another defiant witness is William Mandell.

Congressman Gordon H. Scherer speaks on the activities of Frank Wilkinson, Communist Party Member, during the hearings. A reporter interviews Frank Wilkinson.
