Serving the Merchant Marine 1944
Cutters and destroyers escort an allied convoy and sink a German submarine. Coast Guardsmen patrol dock areas, conduct hearings on a ship sinking, inspect and test a ship’s safety equipment, study the weather, and chart the drift of icebergs. Merchant seamen take Coast Guard examinations, “sign on” a ship, receive their pay, try on gas masks and life jackets, and participate in a life boat drill. Describes the Coast Guard’s safety inspection of merchant ships. Shows Coast Guard vessels, buoys, lighthouses, helicopters, and life saving service stations. Includes views of Coast Guard headquarters and the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C. Adm. Waesche speaks.
