Der Magische Gurtel 1917-1918

Chronicle of the sinking of merchant ships by the German U-boat, U-35, March to May 1917. Ships are identified in the German title cards. This film documents German submarine warfare, depicting a successful voyage.

Reel 2, the Greek steamer India is halted and scuttled. The Italian steamer Stomboli is boarded. An explosive team from the German U-Boat had climbed aboard the steamer “India” and set charges after being stopped in the Atlantic during WWI. The steamship “India” is seen listing and slowly sinks. A dinghy arrives alongside the German U-Boat and unloads several giant sea turtles. U-Boat crew members examine the turtles on the deck of the submarine.

Lookouts on the conning tower of the German U-Boat see smoke on the horizon. The Imperial German Naval war flag is displayed on the conning tower. The Captain calls for full speed ahead and a CU of the controls dial show that being selected.
The Italian armed steamer, “Stromboli” carrying bulk cargoes of iron, steel, and nickel for the Italian war ministry, from Baltimore, U.S.A. to Genoa, Italy. It states that the ship was sunk and her crew released. View from deck of German U-Boat, U-49, under command of Captain Hans von Mellanthin. Several crew seen in conning tower. The single stack ship “Stromboli,” stopped in the background. The U-49 approaches portside of the Stromboli, where a 7.6 cm deck gun is seen astern. An explosives team, is dispatched by dinghy from the U-Boat, and boards the Stromboli. The U-Boat crew members obtain fresh water from the Stromboli, before setting explosives to sink the ship. The German explosives technician is seen lighting fuses on deck of the Stromboli. The charges explode at the waterline of the ship. The U-Boat then fires its deck gun to hasten sinking of the Stromboli. View from the submarine as the Stromboli settles lower in the water and finally sinks stern-first. The location is off Capo Mele, in the Mediterranean Sea. View from the deck of the German U-Boat of sunrise off Algiers.

Captain Wilhelm Werner of German U-Boat, U-7, is seen on deck with his officers consulting navigation charts. Their navigator sights the sun with a sextant to determine their latitude.
